The plateau nobody explains properly
You swim three or four times a week. You have done the drills. You have watched the videos. Your 100 metre time has not moved in two years.
The usual explanations are that you need to work harder, or that your technique is inefficient, or that you should focus on being longer and more streamlined. You have probably tried all three. If any of them were the answer, they would have worked by now.
Here is what is actually happening, and it is mechanical rather than motivational.
A stroke only makes you faster if it moves an optimal body of water. Every stroke that fails to move that water no longer conditions you to improve.
That sentence is the whole book. Above a certain effort your body stops being able to hold the mechanics that move water well. It reorganises itself to survive the effort instead. The pace might hold for another lap or two, which is what makes this so hard to spot, but the stroke underneath it has already changed.
That point has a name. It is your technical threshold, and almost every hard session you have done was spent above it.
Three ways a stroke gives out
Collapse is not one thing and it does not look the same in everyone. It has three signatures, and knowing which is yours changes what you should do on Monday.
Balance collapse

If your stroke rate climbs late in a set while your pace does not, that is not you digging deep. That is the compensation. It is the clearest free signal you have.
The part that will annoy your coach
Nearly every major name in swim coaching gives beginners the same first instruction: get longer, get flatter, reduce drag. Streamline.
For most swimmers that is the wrong first instruction, and here is why.
Resistance rises very steeply with speed. Which means drag is not equally important at every level — a swimmer has to already be producing substantial force before drag becomes the thing holding them back. Chase streamlining before you can hold a stable platform and you are optimising the one variable that is not yet your limit.
Streamlining is an outcome, not an instruction.
Fix balance so the body stops spending propulsion on staying afloat. Then improve how much water the stroke actually moves. Body position tends to arrive on its own, because a swimmer who is balanced and moving water well is, by consequence, in a better shape through the water.
This is not a style preference. It is an order of operations, and getting it backwards is one of the most common reasons capable adult swimmers stay stuck.

Questions
I am a beginner. Is this too advanced?
No, but be honest about where you are. If you are still working on being comfortable and level in the water, the balance chapters are exactly where you should start and the threshold work can wait. The book says so where it applies.
Do I need to be able to film myself?
Not for the book. The threshold test in chapter fourteen needs a pool and a watch, nothing else. Filming makes chapter fifteen far more useful, and the guide for doing it properly with a phone is included.
Is this just another drill book?
No, and that is deliberate. Drills are in part four only, after the diagnosis. A drill applied to the wrong problem, or loaded above your threshold, is how most swimmers end up with a drawer full of drill lists and the same 100 metre time.
Will this take seconds off my time?
Nobody honest can promise you that, because your body, your history and your constraints are yours. What the book gives you is the mechanism and a test you can run yourself. If the mechanism does not describe your swimming, you will know within a week, and the refund stands.
Freestyle only?
Yes. The framework generalises, but every worked example is freestyle and the book does not pretend otherwise.
